Day Five: WITCHES

Here is an excerpt from CRUSHED:

Zach slammed the door so hard that it rattled the diamond-cut windows.  He stormed through the foyer and thundered past the hand-carved staircase on his way to the study where he could contemplate his revenge in private.  That little witch was going to be sorry.  Fists clenched, he walked past the stone fireplace without looking at it.  Changing direction with a sharp turn, he went into the family room instead.

Furious, he stood in the center of the massive room and released a slow, audible breath.

The mansion shook.  A picture fell off the mantle; a vase toppled off the corner table and shattered.  Hearing glass break fueled his anger.  The mansion shook harder, but he didn’t care if the roof caved in on his head.  He was so angry that not even a ton of wood and stone could hurt him.

He turned around slowly and found his sister below the great arch between rooms, hands covering her head in an effort to protect it from the falling debris she probably imagined was on its way.  In his need to blow off some steam, he had forgotten she was in the house.  Her dark brown eyes were wide, terrified.

“Are you okay?” he asked, immediately concerned.

“In an earthquake you are supposed to stand in a doorway.  There are earthquakes in California.  We live in California now.  You should stand over here in the doorway.  You’re supposed to stand in the doorway during an earthquake, and this is an earthquake.  I’ve never been in one, but I’ve read about them.”

Physically, his sister was twenty; mentally, she was a great deal younger.  His parents had figured out there was something wrong with her when she turned five, but they couldn’t take her to a doctor because she was already using her powers.  Their mother had turned to the Internet, researching Morgan’s behavior, and she’d come up with a few possibilities.  Autism had been at the top of the list.

Morgan thought as a child, but she could do some pretty amazing things like remember everything she read word for word.  Other people called it a photographic memory.  He just called it awesome.

Shame filled him, and the house stopped shaking.  “It wasn’t an earthquake, Morgan.  It was just me.  I’m sorry.  I lost control of my powers for a second.  It won’t happen again.”

“Why are you home?”  She lowered her hands.  “This morning you told me you would be here at three o’clock.  I wrote it down.”  Morgan marched over to the coffee table where she’d left her notebook.  She opened it and showed him a page.  “See?  It says right here that Zach is going to be home at three.  We’re going to have a snack together, and then you’re going to make dinner for me at six.”

“I had a small problem at school.”

“But you told me you had to go to school and blend in.  You said you needed to fly below the radar.  You told me we had to be careful so no one would figure out our secret.”

Leave it to Morgan to remember every single word he ever spoke.  She probably wrote it down in her notebook, every syllable.  He sighed and rubbed the throbbing place between his eyes.  No one could make his head ache like Morgan.  He said, “I tried to stick to the plan, but something happened.”

“You aren’t supposed to be home until three o’clock.  It isn’t three o’clock yet.  I haven’t had lunch.  I was about to have my snack, peanut butter and graham crackers, but the house started shaking. I forgot to eat.”

Zach dropped on the sofa, arms crossed, feeling guiltier by the second.  It was his job to take care of Morgan, not to scare her to death.  He stared at the paneled wall without seeing it and mumbled, “You can have your snack now.”

Morgan dipped her head to look at her watch.  Dark brown hair fell forward, covering her quizzical face.  “I can’t eat my snack now.  The time is six minutes after ten.  I have to eat my snack at ten o’clock.”

“It will be okay, Morgan.  This one time you can eat a few minutes late.”

She shook her head stubbornly.  “I can’t eat my peanut butter and graham crackers.  The time is six minutes after ten.  I eat my snack at ten o’clock.”

The anger began to build in his chest again, but he swallowed it quickly

She was the reason he hadn’t done anything about the Noah sisters.  He didn’t want anyone to find out about Morgan and tell the witch’s council, so he had watched those girls from a distance as they’d played their stupid game.  No one knew it, not even Morgan, but he had a small vial of blue dust hidden in a secret drawer in his cherry wood headboard upstairs.

He had made his own love spell potion after realizing what the Noah sisters were doing.  Daydreaming about enchanting the triplets and making them do humiliating things had gotten him through some tough times his Junior year, but he’d been afraid to actually do it.  Love spells had a tendency to not work properly when used on other witches; although, he suspected he had enough power to make it work.

To get her mind off her missed snack, he decided to tell Morgan about his day.  “That stupid little witch blew pink crap into my face.  I should have melted her on the spot.”

Morgan looked faintly alarmed.  “Are we allowed to do that?  You told me we aren’t supposed to hurt people.”  She flipped her notebook to another page and shoved it under his nose.  “See?  Right there.”  She pointed at the neatly printed sentences.  “We aren’t supposed to hurt anyone.  It’s an important rule.  You said so.  I underlined it three times.”

Indeed she had.

Zach swallowed his anger at Kristen Noah and chose his words carefully.  Empathy was a foreign concept to Morgan.  If he didn’t spell it out for her, she could use her powers to hurt somebody… again.

“The girl I’m talking about is a witch, not your average person.  She has powers of her own and obviously isn’t afraid to use them.”

“It’s okay to hurt witches then.  Just not regular people.”

“No.  That isn’t what I’m saying.”  He got up and paced the length of the room while trying to come up with a reasonable argument that Morgan would understand.  He needed to keep it simple.  “If we are attacked, we have to defend ourselves.  Make sense?  We shouldn’t hurt anyone unless our lives are at stake.”  He forced a smile and lowered his face a bit so he could stare straight into her eyes in order to keep her attention focused on him long enough to get his point across.  “I was joking about melting her.  We don’t do that, not ever.  Okay?”

“Will you get in trouble for leaving school early?  You told me you wanted to look normal.  I wrote it down in my notebook, but I remember it too.  I remember you telling me you had to act like a normal teen.”

“Cutting school is what normal teens do.  The wild ones anyway.”  He shrugged and dropped his hands back to his sides.  “Remember me telling you about the witches at school last year?” Once Morgan nodded he said, “Well, one of them tried to enchant me today.”

Morgan’s brows knitted together.  “But you can’t be enchanted.”

“I know that.”

“She doesn’t know.”

Her usual matter-of-fact tone fell on his ears like a cat’s claws on metal.  He sighed.  “No, the witch doesn’t know about me.”

Day Four: WITCHES

What sort of witches do you like?

Let's explore the variety authors and screenwriters have given us over the years. I apologize in advance for all the good ones I miss. This are in no particular order. I add them as they pop into my head.

1. Charmed: This show gives us three sisters with three different personalities. To be honest, this was not a favorite of mine. Seems like every time I watched it the girls were at each other's throats. I thought it was boring.

2. Harry Potter series: With over a hundred characters, I'm sure you can find at least one witch or wizard you enjoy. Do you identify with know-it-all Hermonie? Or maybe you are more like klutzy Neville. Do you feel like a Ron, a sidekick to someone with a great future? What about Harry himself, the boy who lived?

3. Vampire Diaries: Bonnie is a nice girl, albeit scary at times. She started the series in the dark, having no idea she was a witch. This past season showed her powers grow to terrifying heights. Bonnie doesn't know when to quit. She is willing to risk her life to save her friends.

4. Crushed: There are three sisters in this one too. Kristen is the self-appointed leader, but her angry often harsh sister Brittany doesn't always follow. Of course it is going to take a special boy to come between these girls, and Kristen finds him in Zach Bevian, a wizard with dark powers.

5. Sabrina: I used to watch the TV show. It was fun. Sabrina had a talking black cat and two aunts who constantly tried to point her in the right direction. Since she was just learning to use her powers, Sabrina often learned her lessons the hard way after using a spell she wasn't able to control.

6. Wizard of Oz: Did you prefer the good witch or the bad one in this classic movie? Personally, I liked that a house fell on one of them and that water melted the other. LOL. Flying monkeys.

The WOODLOW MANSION

Shannon was only in the sanitarium for a few minutes, but it had seemed an eternity. She couldn't shake the feeling of being watched as she darted for the car. A cold numbing sensation infiltrated her bones.

Poor Tyler. He'd spent six months in that place. If a short visit could affect her this way, what had it done to the impressionable boy?

She sat in the back with Tyler while Nick drove the long four-door car.

Nick glanced in the rearview mirror at his brother every few minutes, but he didn't say anything. His lips compressed into a tight line, and his hands tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles were white.

After dropping Johnny off so he could drive his own car, they headed for their new temporary home. Johnny was going to pick up the kids from their grandparents' house. As they headed out of town, Shannon gave Tyler her full attention. She wondered if he was aware they were no longer in that dreadful place.

She turned sideways, facing Tyler. She focused on his blank expression while she talked to him, searching for a sign of the old Tyler. Maybe she could break through the drug-induced fog enough to reassure him. He swayed with the car's every movement as if he didn't have a bone in his body.

"We're going to a new house," she said, using the cheerful voice she usually reserved for her son when he needed to do something unpleasant like get a shot. "Johnny and Nick are having a little trouble with their other business partner, so we're going to hide out for a while."

"We're not hiding out," Nick injected. His intrusive voice bounced against the soft leather interior. "I thought Johnny explained things to you. We have to leave the country... permanently. This isn't a drill. We aren't coming back."

"Do you mind?" She pushed the back of his shoulder with two fingers. "I'm talking to Tyler, not you.  And maybe I don't want to scare the crap out of him. Okay? He doesn't need to know about the m-e-n with the g-u-n-s that might be coming for us."

Nick's eyes met hers in the rearview, filled with amusement. "He can spell, you know?"

Now she felt stupid.

"I know that. Just shut up and drive."

Her gaze returned to Tyler. His expression hadn't changed. She stroked dark hair away from his eyes while she continued to talk to him in a happy, soothing voice. She told him about the house. She hadn't seen it yet, not in person, but someone had emailed it to her, and it was perfect.

A ghost house.

Shannon had published the last book in a popular series last year. Since then, she hadn't written a single word. No one knew about the frustrating writer's block. They didn't know she was scared to death she wouldn't be able to shake the clinging remnants of vampire lore off her tired brain. Not her husband Johnny, who would listen to her go on and on for hours about her characters even though he didn't give a hoot about fiction. Not her best friend Nick, the shoulder she cried on and the one who was always good for encouragement. Not even her harried agent who called the house at least twice a day to ask when the new manuscript would be finished.

He would drop dead on the spot if he found out there wasn't a new manuscript, not yet.

She hadn't told a soul.

She had trouble admitting the truth to herself. Day after day, she forced herself to sit at the computer, praying for a breakthrough.

Every time she tried to write, her mind conjured images of angry fans. They wanted more of the old vampires from her previous series. They didn't want new.  Sometimes she wished she hadn't gotten famous so fast. Perhaps if she'd gotten a few other series under her belt, people wouldn't expect her to stick with the same stories over and over.

Inspiration had come in the form of a mysterious email, an attachment of a place called Woodlow Hills. The Woodlow Mansion, a scary monstrosity, sat on top of a hill overlooking a cute village. The picture of the house drew her in deeper. It practically screamed horror. No way could she sleep inside of that house without coming up with a major series.

Ghosts. Her next book would definitely be about floating spirits. She didn't have any of the particulars yet. The rest would come. She had no doubt the Woodlow Mansion would fill her mind with dark images. Soon, she'd have the characters and plot firmly in place. She was sure the words would start to flow.

She'd scare the hell out of her readers. Just wait.

...wait.

Day Three

CREEPY AND LOVING IT!!!

I belong to a new group called YA Storytellers, and we are going to do a lot of fun and AWESOME things!  At the end of this paragraph I will add the link so you can read the other creeeeepy posts. Today we are putting up creepy excerpts. I will just continue on with The Woodlow Mansion.

The Woodlow Mansion

The doctor explained, "Tyler remains lost in the delusion that some sort of creature living in the rearview mirror forced his car to crash. Guilt over the accident is buried deep, and he will need years of therapy just to reach it, before we can even attempt to deal with it. With all due respect to my boss, who is a business man and not a doctor, by the way, I strongly urge you to leave the boy in my care."

"So you can continue to drug him?" Shannon shook with barely contained rage. "No way."

"He needs professional help."

"He needs his family!"

Shannon lowered her voice and stepped closer to the doctor when she noticed the patients becoming agitated by her angry outburst. She held tight to her purse with both hands as if she thought someone might try to steal it. "If something comes us we can't handle, I'll call you. Good enough?"

"The sooner the better, for the boy's sake."

She moved in the direction of the door, but she walked backwards in order to keep the doctor in view. A small voice warned her not to turn her back on anyone in this place. They might decide to drug and keep her. Wanting to end the meeting on a high note, she said, "I'll send you an autographed book for your wife."

The doctor smiled for a moment. Then it was gone. She pivoted and walked as fast as her three-inch-heels would allow. Panic set in as she realized the boys were long gone. She hadn't meant to let them get that far ahead of her. Fear gripped her cold hand like an old friend. The hallway seemed to stretch on forever, riddled with locked doors. She hurried.

She held her purse tighter.  For a while, the only sound she heard was her stilettoes clicking against the linoleum. The words dead man walking sprang to mind. Of course, in her case it would be dead woman walking. She would have smiled at that, if she wasn't so freaked out by her surroundings.

A man's face appeared in the small, square window of one door. She jumped sideways, startled. The knob turned. She saw a flash of a bald head and manic eyes. The door opened. She froze in terror. The man was letting himself out of the room. Weren't these the rooms that held the dangerous patients?

The man with the crazy look in his eyes stepped into the hallway, and the sight of a tan uniform brought bone-melting relief to her body. The janitor was pushing a soapy-water filled bucket around with his mop.

No longer caring what people thought, she began to run for the nearest exit. Her twisted imagination worked overtime. She half expected something to leap out, grab her, and drag her into a tiny room, something huge with teeth.

The exit loomed ahead. She could see bright sunshine through glass doors. She raced past the nurse from earlier. The woman wore an amused expression and tapped her pencil against the counter in perfect rhythm with Shannon's fleeing shoes. In the back of her mind, Shannon heard a voice. We'll wait for you to come back. They always come back. And when you do, you can stay longer.

The Woodlow Mansion (part 2)

"Of course not," the doctor said as he scratched his head. "It was an accident, but Tyler continues to blame himself. I'm afraid he hasn't shown any signs of improvement since being admitted last year."

"He's eighteen now. I want him." Shannon steeled herself for a fight. "I have the papers, so go get him."

Dr. Mosley held his hands up. "I understand you have papers. But young Mr.Brody is better off with us. He is sick."

"Where is he?"

"I believe he's in the common area. The non-violent patients enjoy a certain amount of freedom here. I will take you to him. Follow me."

The doctor led them deep into the bowels of Greenbrooke Sanitarium. From the outside, the place looked more like a resort than a home for the certifiably insane, bright and cheery with manicured lawns and carefully planted gardens, but the further they went, the more un-resort-like it became.

The sights, smells, and sounds of Greenbrooke engaged the creative side of Shannon's brain. It would be the perfect setting for her next horror novel. An occasional scream triggered her adrenaline. Panic rose to the surface of her crawling skin.

Poor Tyler. How had he survived this place for so long? She slid an arm through Johnny's and held tight as she allowed her imagination to run wild. She wanted to anchor herself to reality even as her mind went on a horrific journey. Part of her wished the walls could talk. They would have terrifying tales to tell. She was sure of it.

The imagery of Tyler being held down by burly orderlies, restrained in a straight-jacket, locked away like an animal, pushed her legs to move faster. Maybe she'd seen too many scary movies, but she wouldn't be able to breathe normally again until she saw Tyler with her own eyes.

She released Johnny's arm and hurried past the doctor as the common area opened wide before them. Her eyes skimmed over the patients until they landed on Tyler. Her breath caught in her throat. It was worse than she'd imagined.

Tyler sat in a corner chair, leaning heavily to he left. He wore a pair of striped pajamas beneath a light blue robe. A line of drool trailed down one side of his chin, and his beautiful blue eyes were unfocused, empty. He didn't notice them arrive. He didn't care.

"You drugged him!" She glared at the doctor before dropping to her knees in front of Tyler. She stroked his hands. Then she lightly touched the side of his face, hoping for a reaction. "Honey, can you hear me? We're getting you out of here."

"I assure you that Mr. Brody has been treated very well."

Nick grabbed the doctor by the arm and dragged him close enough, so he could lean down and whisper in the man's ear. "If I find out you did any permanent damage to my brother, life as you know it will end."

Mosley's eyes widened.

After hearing the hushed threat, Shannon leaped to her feet. The last thing they needed was for the doctor to call the police.  She pulled Nick away from the doctor and jerked her head at Johnny. "Help Tyler to the car. He can't make it by himself, and we need to get him out of here."

Johnny raised an eyebrow, probably wondering when she'd started giving him orders. With a shrug, he grabbed Tyler's arm and pulled him to his feet. This was her show. He'd promised his full cooperation, said he would follow her lead no matter what.

Johnny and Nick trapped Tyler between their bodies, holding him on his unsteady feet. They headed for the hallway, while Shannon lingered behind to have a private conversation with the doctor. She waited until her boys out of earshot.

"Other than being drugged, what's wrong with him?"

The Woodlow Mansion (part one)

"Tyler Brody," Shannon said, slapping a release form on the counter. "Get him out here now."

The nurse sputtered, "I-I don't think--"

"Don't think," Shannon snapped. "Just do it. Your boss signed the papers himself. There's no reason for you to deny us. I don't think Mr. Raymond would appreciate being called away from his Friday morning golf game because his incompetent staff can't do their jobs, but I'll call him if I have to."

Shannon lifted her cell in a silent threat.

"I like your style," Johnny whispered in her ear from behind. Her husband and his partner were content to let her do the work on this one.

She fought back the satisfied smile threatening to lift the corners of her mouth. This was not the time to gloat. She had to remain tough and in control or they would lose Tyler forever. Leaving the country without him was unthinkable.

For two months they'd tried every logical avenue available to them in an attempt to get Tyler released from the Greenbrooke Sanitarium. Nothing worked. Every plea to see him was met with cold, blunt refusal. So they'd done it the illegal way. The papers were real, but her husband and his partner had used force to get the signed. At least Mr. Raymond had given in before Johnny followed through and broke both his knee caps.

Johnny and Nick flanked her in dark suits and Secret-Service-type sunglasses. Alleged racketeers, they wore an aura of danger along with the suits and glasses. If Shannon hadn't known them both since grade school, she would have been running for cover.

The nurse picked up the phone and whispered a few brisk words into the receiver. Although Shannon hoped the woman was calling for Tyler, she wasn't surprised when an elderly man in white approached on fast feet.

"I'm Dr. Mosley," the gray-haired man said, sticking his hand out.  "Tyler Brody is my patient. I understand you want us to release him into your custody? Is that correct?"

Johnny looked at the extended hand with distaste, while Nick remained statue-still, not even glancing down at it. After clearing his throat, the doctor lowered his hand. He turned a phony smile in Shannon's direction. It only took him a split-second to realize he was standing in front of literature royalty. The smile turned genuine, and the man actually blushed.

"Hey, aren't you that writer?"

It was a tired mantra she'd come to expect at the worst of times, even when she was doing personal business in a public restroom.

She forced an answering smile and raised thin shoulders. "In the flesh."

"My wife is never going to believe I met you. She's read all your books."

Any second the man would ask for her autograph. She snatched the papers from the counter and handed them to the doctor. "As I was telling the nurse here, these papers were signed by Mr. Raymond himself. Tyler's parents had no right to commit him. Despite what they may have told you, Lucy's death was not his fault."
Come back tomorrow for part 2 of The Woodlow Mansion.
